Of Women Smokers.
Smoking has now become so common among wdmen that j;he voices raised in public protest against, it become fewer and fewer. So many people depend upon the favor of women that it isn’t always wise to fulminate against their vices, real or alleged. The average man still retains his prejudice against the use of tobacco by women, however freely he may indulge himself, but very, often ho is so situated that he doesn’t dare to say so. One clergyman said that it was unwise to say in the pulpit what might drive women church-goers away and prevent them from a possible reception of private advice on trie subject. a An eminent physician said: “I wouldn’t dare criticise: a woman for smoking—too many of my women friends enjoy the practice—but I would not like to ' see my wile or daughter attempt to.smoke.” Lawyers confide .that: “If a woman wants to smoke she has a right to, but it is a privilege wo don’t want the women of our families‘ to enjoy. . Condemn it! It would be as much as our practice is woidhiby WomeiT,.are' clients as •well, as men—we can’t afford to offend them. r ' ! : r- —7— .
