STRIKE IN THE STATE COAL MINE.

A "WORKING MINER’S OPINION.

TPkr Press Association.! WESTPORT, Dec. 4. A working miner acquainted with the conditions says: “The miners of Westport district are very indignant at the Government because it will not concede at Grey mouth the same conditions as prevail at Mokihinui and all over this district. At the same time I do not think that there will be a, general strike. A general ballot would have to be taken, as the miners in this district feel that any reduction in the tonnage rate at Grey would sooner or later affect the miners here. The authority states that the annual conference of the Miners’ Federation asked the Hon. R. McKenzie to abolish truck, ing by hewers at the State mine, and he said it was a matter for the local management and the men to settle. The. miner interviewed denied that the trucking would cost £4OOO. Further it would be impossible with the man working at the face for miners to earn 14s a day. Ho claims that the conditions and remuneration are better in Westport district mines than at the Grey State mines.
