BOROUGH LOANS.

[TO TITE EdITOE.] -Sir,—As a resident of this district for nine years, during which time I have in my business engagements been brought into touch with very many of its residents, I think your remarks in your issue of Friday last- as .to the tone of the sentiments expressed by one of our Borough Councillors at a recent meetirfg will be considered in the same light that you have done by a large proportion of our citizens. With every respect for that gentleman, you have quoted some of his remarks as a newcomer to the district which -will tend, in my humble opinion, to alienate ratlter than attract many voters. As a humble citizen I thin'k the Council in making the electors swallow all their plans in one great-dose is making a huge mistake, and likely to be thoroughly resented. To compel us to vote for a loan of nearly £200,000 at the present time is, in my humble opinion, an utterly uncalled for and mistaken policy. To give each citizen a correct statement of each proposal and separate ballot-papers for each, is to my mind common sense, justice, and fair play, as well as being m accordance. with democratic principles. 1 trust it will vet be adopted by our Councillors.—l am, etc., • J. PECKOVER. Gisborne, Dec. 4.
