ART CURIO AND INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION.
SUCCESSFUL FACTION ANTICI-
The Industrial, Art and Curio Exhibition, which opens m the Garrison Hall to-morrow evening, at / p.m., "arousing a great amount of interest locally, and promises to be an entertainment unique m the history of uisborne. The hall resounded with the sound of hammer and saw all. day yesterday, as those who are making trade displays were preparing the foundations of their stalls, and a number of carpenters were engaged m erecting stagings fixtures, etc., in connection with sicTe-'shows, and for the reception oi articles for exhibition. The hall ha 3 been portioned off, the trade exhibits bein" placed right round three sides of it while in the centre will be three rows’of tables, glass cases, etc., where curios, woodwork, pictures, flax fibre, etc., will be displayed. Tnerc will also be a n-ooL drink” stall, which, if the present weather continues, will no doubt be a centre of attraction. The following are the arms to whom space has been allotted:-Gisborne Gas Company, Ltd “Poverty Lay Herald,” Messrs John Townley. E. AY. Burton, Jas. East, J. Jowers, A Parnell and Co., Chrisp and Son, Miller and Craig, D- J. Barry. J. B I*>don, Grundy and Shennan, and Malcolm and Co Mr Alex. Thompson is also arranging an effective floral display, and the electrical display promises to bo excellent. As well as a display, Mr. Jow_ ors will give an exhibition of confectionery manufacturing.The Fire Brigade will have a collection of their gear there, both for exhibition purposes, and for use m case of emergency. Elaborate precautions have been taken to prevent a possible outbreak of fire. A plentiful supply of water will be available, some or the firemen will sleep on tne premises each nmht, and, in addition,. a nightuatchxnan will he constantly in the »icinity. Some most valuable curios have been received for exhibition, and a great many more have still to come to hand. In this division, a most successful exhibition is assured. The side-shows also will be a feature of the entertainment, and reference to the advertisement or the exhibition will show that they are most varied in type. The musical competitions, an innovation as far as Gisborne is concerned, promise to be decidedly interesting. They will take place in the following order: Wednesday night, piano solos for seniors and mixed quartettes; Thursday afternoon, piano sclcs for juniors: Thursday night, brass instrument solo and male quartettes: Friday night, choir contest and rendering of test- piece by massed choirs. The results of each will he announced the following evening. The competitions ‘will start each evening at 9 p.m.. and the matinee contests will take place at 3.30 p.m. A raised platform is being erected in front of the stage, where the different competitors will take their stand, and the judges will ‘be screened off in separate places in the body of the hall. The preliminary trial in connection with the selection of those to take part in the brass instrument solo contest took place last night in the Wesley schoolroom. ■ There were 13 competitors, and thß following were selected by the judges to compete: —Messrs T. Williams, C. Clayton. H. Torrens, and F. C. Wilkinson. The judges were Messrs M. L. Foster, C. Adair, and J. Brown, and the accompaniments were played bv Mesdames Wilkinson and Foster, and Mr. Gittos. The large stage at the hall will be divided off, a portion being used for a refreshment room, and a portion for the use of the performers in the different contests. The exhibition opens to-morrow evening at 7 p.m.. and the official opening by o His Worship the Mayor takes place at 8 p.m. It will be open each evening, and matinees will be held on Thursday and Saturday afternoons, at 2 p.m. Arrangements have been made for a late train on Saturday night, leaving town at 10.30 p.m. and running right through to Waikohu. A special orchestra has been arranged for to nerform on the opening evening, and the art union will be drawn on Saturday evening. Meetings of the different committees and of the Executive were heid lart night, under the presidency of Mi*. J. W. J. Preston. Satisfactory rep >rfcs were received as to the progress being made with the different arrangements, and a number of the final details were attended to. Everything is well in hand, and it is anticipated that the entertainment will be a thoroughly successful one in every way.
