RESULTS OF ESSAY COMPETITION.

The secretary of the British and h <or-eio-n Sailors’ Society, London, lias forwarded to the Education Department the results of the essay competition on “Captain James Cook, his voyages and discoveries and their value to the nation, commerce, and Christianity. Tho successful competitors. are For North Island: Patrick Neville, District High School, Onehunga; and Alice K. Wilson Girls’ Grammar School, Auckland. For the South Island: Douglas W. McClure, Waitala Boys School, Oamaru; and Johanna _M. Brosnalian, District High School, Lawrence, Otago. There were 1 8 competitors from New Zealand, a larger number, says the secretary of the society, than that for the whole of Australia. The essays were sent in by children m Great Britain, Canada, South Africa, Australia, and Now Zealand. Each successful competitor will be presented with -,a plaque composed of copper taken from the Victory and other famous battleships. When notifying the results, the secretary said that .the New South Wales essays were, on the whole, of the highest merit, and that the South Island of New Zealand came second.
