THE GOVERNMENT’S INTENTIONS

United I’ucsh Association—Copyright. ' SYDNEY, Dec. 9. There is much unrest among wharf laborers. At a meeting last night it was decided to ask all wharf laborers who are members of the naval and military forces to resign therefrom. A mass meeting of the Union, has, been called for Saturday to consider the attitude in regard to the strike. The Government’s invitation to owners and -men to work the mines has been published. The Acting-Premier expressed a hope of the parties still coming together. He added that'failing this it would be easy to supply the public with coal to-morrow. He understood that the Southern and Western miners were willing and waiting to go to work, and only want the consent of the Strike Congress to return. They had no grievances. He hoped that wise counsels would prevail in theso districts." The Lord Mayor submitted to Mr. Wade a scheme of mediation by compulsion. The Premier could not see his way to act upon it, as he considered it amounted to nationalisation. Mr Hughes has expressed an opinion in favor of the Government taking over the mines as a temporary expedient. It is believed the men would be willing to work for the Government. He at any rate ivould advise them to do so. MR BOWLING IN AGGRESSIVE MOOD. Mr Bowling, addressing a meeting at AVallsend, declared that Mr Hughes’ leadership had been a failure.
