THURSDAY COMPETITION. The Thursday competition was resumed yesterday afternoon at Victoria Domain and Taruheru, when the matches postponed ficun the previous Thursday on account of the rain, were concluded. The bad weather which has interfered with competition matches to. so great an extent this season was again in evidence, and drizzling showers fell throughout the afternoon, but did not cause a cessation of play. UNITED V. ALHAMBRA. With two wickets down for _ 42, Alhambra resumed their first innings yesterday, Babbs (11) and Atkinson (0) being the not out batsmen. With the exception of Babbs, the remaining batsmen made an indifferent stand against the bowling of Manning and Sharpies, and the innings closed for 96. Babbs had more than a fair share of luck In contributing his score of 41, not out. Witli his total at 18, he was smartly caught at the wickets by Armstrong, off Manning, but was given not out, by a mistake of the umpire, who failed to see a distinct snic’k. In addition to this let-off lie also gave a couple of chances to tThrd man. However, luck of this sort is all in the game, and Babbs showed splendid defence ,in withstanding the attack of some really good bowling from Manning, Sharpies, and Grenfell. United ran up 64 for one wicket in their second innings when the innings was declared closed. Gibson and Sharpies put on 27 for the first'wicket, and another good stand by Gibson and Manning carried the total from 27 to 64, when the closure was applied. With an hour to bat and 153 runs to make to avoid defeat. Alhambra entered on their second innings. A most exciting finish wac. witnessed, Alhambra just succeeding in playing out time. Stuckey, the last man present on the ground, called up apnlause by successfully negotiating tfie last three balls from Manning. The total at call of time was 39 for eight wickets. Olsen showed sound defence in scoring 16, not out, and played a good innings. United thus secured a 2-point win bv 89 runs on tlie first innings. %srenfell did some particularly good bowling for United in the second innings of Alhambra, sending down 48 balls for five wickets and 11 runs, and accomplishing the “hattrick”. Manning also bowled well in securing three wickets for 10 runs off 48 balls. The following are the scores: ALHAMBRA. —Ist Innings. J. Lang, c Gibson, b Eafrell ... 22 O. R. Olsen, 'b Farrell 4 T. Gibson (12) were tbe only other batsmen to make a stand, and the innings closed for 158, 11 runs short of Y.M.C.A.’s first inning’s total. Barker bowled splendidly for Y.M.C.A., as his figures disclose: 25 overs, 8 maidens, 38 runs, 7 wickets. He kept a consistent length, and varied his length and pace with judgment, employing a fast off-break and slow leg-break with effect. At call of .time, Y.M.O.A. had run up 79 for the loss of seven wickets. A. It. Barker followed lip his consistent series of good scores again getting going in his best form, and his inning of 44 was the only double-figure total on the score sheet for his side. He showed sound defence, but came down heavily on anything at all short or overnitclied. Monk (five for 24) and Scholium (two for. 9) did some exceptionally good bowling for Te Ran.
