BOWLING.

GISBORNE CLUB

There was a very strong muster of players on the green of the Gisborne Club yesterday afternoon. Seven rinks were in play, and some very enjoyable and well-contested games ivere got off. The green was in capital order, and all present had a very pleasant time. The following were the results of the games : —-Handicap Fours.Brown, Morgan, R. G. Crawford, J. J. Martin (skip) (1) 26, beat Zaehariah (sub), Bullock, Benzie, Witty (skip) (6) 18.—Martin’s rink led throughout the game, and were never troubled. On two heads they got in four bowls, and on two beads they lay three. Witty scored on seven heads, and on the 21st got in five bowls. —Eure Gold Stars. — Burton, Mackintosh, Hennessy, Eure (skip) 23, beat Zachariah, Kyme, A:nbridge, J. J. Martin (skip) 19. —The game was very evenly contested. Euro had the -advantage in the earlier stages, but Martin’s rink afterwards raided and i>ut u,p a very good fight. —Handicap Singles.— Simson (1) 24, beat Townson (9) 20— On the 14th head Simson by getting in three bowls passed his opponent, the scores then being Simson 18, Townson. 17. Thereafter Simson had all the best of the game, putting up a couple of twos and the same number of singles, ' while his opponent got in three singles. Eure (2) 22, beat Williams (7) 17. — Eure overhauled his antagonist « n the 12th head, when the score was J. 4 all. Thereafter he had all the best of it, scoring on seven heads, and finally winning by five points. The second round of this competition is now concluded. —Colts’ Singles.— The first match in the Colts’ Singles was -played between Hoff and Grieve, the latter winning by 30 points to 7. —Other Matches.— ; Grieve, Pav.itt, Corson,. Smith; (skip) 21, beat Gilmour, Burton, M. Craig,' Ponsford (skip) 20. Johnstone, AV. Pettie, Greig (skip) 26, beat Seymour, Kyme, Robertson (skip) 17. ■■■ v ' Hoff, Ambridge,' T. A. Crawford (skip) 27, beat Wootton, Hennessy, Bright (skip) 15. Kirk and Dodd 23, beat Pasley and Hookey 20. TURANGANUI CLUB. Despite the threatening aspect of the weather there was a good gathering of howlers yesterday afternoon on the green of the Turanganui Bowling Club, and some pleasant games were played. A number of ladies were also present, and took a keen interest in the play. Afternoon tea' was provided by Mrs. M. G. Nasmith, junr;, who was astistcd by Mesdaines Bousfield and Muir, the refreshments being much ip preedited. The following are the results of the match games. —Bennett Cup.—B. H'ird-20 beait C. J. Bennett 16. — This provided a very interesting game. On the 4th head the scores were 3 all, but on the Bth head Bennett had a lead of two —8 to 6. On the 12th head Hird reversed matters with 10 to 9, but on the 14th head the players were 13 all. Again on the 16th head the scores were even, 14 all, and the board/ showed 16 all on the 18th head. On the last three heads Bennett failed to score, and Hird won by four points. T. McConnell 21 beat J. Colley 17. At the commencement of the game, McConnell ran- away from his opponent, he being k2 to 5 on the 9th head. Colley then made a good recovery, and was'but three down on the 18th head, 13 to 16. AVith steady play on both sides the board showed “honors even” on the 20th head. On the final head Colley failed entirely, and McConnell,

getting in four good bowk/ won by that number. C. J. Bennett 21 ..beat W. H. Douglas 20.—0 n the 6th head Bennett had a lead of seven —-9 to 2, but with good scoring Douglas evened matters up on the 10th head—ll all. Getting on a four and a two, Bennett wa? 17 to 11 on the 12th head, but Douglas was not to be outdone, for on the 21st head the latter got in three and tied. In the extra head played, Bennett obtained a single, and thus won by that margin. —Challenge Walking Stick. — T. McConnell (challenger) 5 beat J. D. Jeune (holder) 3.—McConnell scored a single on the first head, followed by a two. On the 3rd head Jeune drew' blood, but McConnell replied with two singles. Requiring four to tie, Jeune plaved well on the last head. McConnell lay one, with three seconds against him. Jeune came down a yard gone on the shot bowl, took it out, but inadvertently carried the jack, and thus lay two, McConnell’s back bowls saving. The latter thus' won by two P °R t Thelwall has challenged the holder of the stick.
