McKenna, First Lord of the Admiralty, in a speech at Earn worth, said in his opinion Lancashire was the pivot of the political situation. If they sent back the same stalwart band of' Liberals the victory fo the •.people was won. Lancashire had the reputation of thinking to-dqy what England would think to-morrow. Mr C. F. G. Masterton, Liberal M.P. for West Ham, speaking ;it Ihrlesden, said lie would support any cam didate, whether, Liberal, Labor, or Nationalist, provided he was with the people against the Lords. Mr Balfour, Leader of the Opposition, shortly issues a manifesto. PUBLIC INDIFFERENCE. ' • - . f Many newspapers emphasise the absence of popular excitement in Britain regarding the Lords’ action in suspending the Budget. At present there is no activity outside the usual political machinery. . Mr Will Thorn- declares* that the' Labor partj' will do its utmost to ensure the Government’s return. Mr Ure again declares that the man who votes for tariff reforms votes for a discontinuation of the old age pension, inasmuch as the tariff would be inadequate. Mr Redmond declares that not for 150 years has such an opportunity been offered to Ireland. He emphasises Lord Rosebery’s and Lord Lansdowne’s statement that the peers’ veto is the only remaining obstacle to Home Rule. Dr. Clifford has issued a manifesto appealing to passive resisters to support the abolition of the .Lords’ veto. The Navy League is impressing all candidates with the need of a twoPower standard.. Peers are addressing election meetings. Lords Camperdown and Ivesteven spoke against the Government, and Lords Sheffield and Lyveden for the Government.
