DESTRUCTIVE BUSH FIRES

A scorching nor’-Avester prevailed all day. The thermometer in the city was only a couple of points short of 103. A cool change took place to-night. The city is ringed with bush fires in the outer suburbs. One at Cabromatta destroyed Hirst’si sawmills and damaged the railway line. (Received December 15. 1.15 a.m.) The heat and the subsequent storm disorganised telegraphic communication. There are bush fires in many parts of the country. A Avide area on the Blue Mountains is burning. Several valuable residences were destroyed in the vicinity of Katoomba. The damage is estimated at several thousands sterling.
