The first athletic sports meeting in connection, with the Gisborne High School was held, under the patronage of the Board of Governors, on Victoria Domain yesterday afternoon. The weather was beautifully 'fine, and a large attendance of ladies and. school girls, in summer finery, made the ground lok picturesque im the extreme. There was also a .fair number of men present, and all spent a very enjoyable afternoon. The arrangements were admirable, and the secretary (Mr, W. A. G. Penlington), the headmaster (Mr.'Gatland), Mr. F. J. Wilkes, arid a committee of boys got tihe 23 events off in quick: succession. ' - • L _ i During the afternoon the Higli School girls distributed refreshments, and Vita Bros.’ orchestra’ helped to add to the enjoyment of the occasion. It is the intention .of the committee:' to make the gathering an annual tine, to be run on the voluntary contributions of townspeople, and if every year sees the same support given, the sports should be the occasion of the year, for the High School. : - ; The .events brought forth large entries, and good fields were despatched by Mr. W. Howard in a' very capable manner. There was one spill during the . progress of a bicycle race, the boys fortunately being unhurt, otherwise nothing occurred to spoil the pleasure of those participating.-; A handsome silver-mounted oak cup, presented by Mr. R. H. Image, capable of holding two .bands' of shields, upon which the winner’s-name wil be engraved: every year, was Avon by, G- Porter, who out of the eight events in connection with the cup secured two firsts and three (seconds, making a total of 12 points. The second highest total was that of

A close finish, the three placed men being in a bunch. 220yds Handicap (under 14). —H. Chrisp (6yds) 1, D. Muir (syds) 2, C. Colley (scr) 3. Time. 29 3-ssec. Four started. Won easily by several yards. Long Jump (open).—G. Porter (17ft 4in) 1, F. Stevensdn (17ft OJin) 2, L. Morice (16ft 3in) 3. Five entries. Porter and Stevenson tied in the first jumps, and in the jump-off Porter came out the winner with a fine jump. 220yds Handicap (under 15). —H. Chrisp (16yds) 1, E. Chrisp (15yds) 2, M. Quigley (14yds) 3. Time, 27 3-5 sec. Ten started. Won comfortably. Half-mile Handicap (open).—L. Torrie (6vds) 1, Morice (scr) 2, D. McIldowie (23yds) 3. Time, 2min 26sec. Nine started, but only the placed competitors finished. Won by about four yards, second and third being close together. • One Mile Walk Handicap (open).— R. Davidson (35yds) 1, L. Torrie. (30 yds) 2, J. Forsyth (35yds) 3. Time, lumin 2sec. Four started. The first and second competitors walked well together to within a couple of hundred yards off the tape, when Davidson polled ahead and won comfortably, walking in good style. 100yds Championship (under 15).--G. Five competitors. 100yds School Championship.—G. Porter 1, F. Stevenson 2, F. Harding 3. Time, 11 3-ssec. The only starte“rs. The finish was very exciting, Porter just winning by about half-a-yard. The third man was a long way in the rear.

One Mi- e Bicycle Handicap.—First heat: D. Mclldowie (35yds) 1, F. Bishop (30yds) 2, Torrie (15yds) 3. Time, 3min I2sec. Seven started. Second heat: G. Parker (200yds) 1, L. Clare (30yds) 2, R. Davidson (30yds) 3. Time 3mm 12sec. Final: Clare 1, Bishop '2, Parker 3. Time, 3min 5 2-ssec. Clare won by a few yards, and the other placed men fought a hard finish, Bishop getting second place by about a yard. One Mile Handicap (open). —E. Chrisp (80yds) 1, Morice (scr) 2, Trafford (65yds) 3. Time, omin 32 3-ssec. Chrisp led all the way, and won comfortably. Six started. Placed men only finished. 220yds Public School Handicap.—A.
