THE LOAN PROPOSALS.
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. A meeting of the committee set up from the ratepayers favorable to the loan proposals was held in the Farmers’ Union rooms last evening. Mr. T. E. Toneycliffe occupied the chair, and there were over 35 gentlemen present. The Chairman explained a number of arrangements that had been taken, in hand, and made a lengthy reference to the attitude of the minority on the Concil, who had opposed the loan proposals. .He said that for over three months they had had the chance to bring forward proposals for the good of the borough, as every Councillor had a right to do, and had not- done so, but instead had got at the Mayor to formulate a policy, whch he did._ Then they wanted to adversely criticise the policy at a meeting of the Finance Committee, but instead the whole Council had gone into the matter as a Finance Committee, which was right and proper. The way they were talking made at appear that the whole power of the Council was in the Mayor, but that was not so, as it was in the majority of the Council. Dealing with tho question of the Waimata bridge, Mr. Tonevcliffe said it was the duty of every shopkeeper, who had parcels to deliver, to vote for the bridge. He cited the case of Christchurch, where, he said, there was a bridge over the river Avon at the end of almost every street. The meeting then went through the roll of ratepayers, and it was decided to meet again at 7.30 p.m. to-night, instead of 8 p.m
