THE LOAN PROPOSALS.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE.

The committee in support of the bor- N ough loan proposals met in the Farmers' Union room last night. There was an attendance of about 30 members, y In the absence of Mr. T. E. Tonevcliffe, who was otherwise eugaged, Mr. W. F. Crawford was voted to the chair. Satisfactory reports were, received from the members of the executive as to the details arranged for 0 n the polling day. ■&. The committee considered the question of whether the correspondence of Mr. H. Hill should be replied to, and it was fjgj decided that it was not so, as the committee considered /lie had taken an extremely hostile attitude,..on. an imperfect basis, as was shown by his statement that, if the loan was carried, V it meant 30s a head on the present Hg population to pay the interest and sinking fund. It was pointed out that, /, by Mr. Hill’s own admission, there was over 6000 population in Gisborne, | which would mean £9OOO. If he figured the thing out he would find it would come to several thousands less, but as . • a matter of fact the population of Gisborne is between 7000 and 8000, which would make his figures still further incorrect.

The Mayor was present, and was asked a number of questions on the loan proposals, one of wdiich was in what order w'as it suggested that the various tvorks, if authorised, should be carried out. He replied that he considered the drainage should be first pushed on in the streets which required the most work doing to them to save load maintenance, and, simultaneously with the drainage, the tram construction should proceed: on the same streets, which would make seven feet of roadway in the centre of the street, which would have to he ballasted with 1.6 inches of Ratutahi metal. Then would follow the read construction.

The Mayor was also asked what roads it was proposed to reticulate W'ith -water mains out of the loan I'oney, and, in reply, gave the following list: — Crawford Road 48 chains, Stanley,--! Road 22 chains, Fox Street 12 chains, Harris Street and Hura Hura Road 15 chains, Wellington Street- 20 chains, ■’Leith Street 10 chains, Mil] Road 20 j chains, Dickson Road 7 chains, Iranui Road 40 chains,Graham Road 8 chains, DeLautour' Road chains, Doleman. Road 12 chains, Abbott Road J. 5 chains, Adair Rond 5 chains, Heta?| Road 10 chains, Childers Road West < 13£ chains, Lytton Road 37 Coleman and Cheeseman Roads 10 chains.

Mr. Arundel, a licensed plumber, . stated that in reference to the probable cost of sanitary connections, he would be prepared to contract to put in ordinary water-closet sanitary appliances, including a cistern,' guaranteed to serve all purposes, for £3. The piping would be additonal, at Is Tier foot for a 4-inch' drain complete, including labor of laying. kf
