A GREAT JOURNALIST

The death is announced of Mr Frederick Greenwood, the well-known au-thor-journalist.
[Frederick Greenwood was the originator and first editor of the “Pall Mall Gazette.” When Mr. Yates Thompson purchased that journal' and turned it into a Liberal paper, Mr. Greenwood, with other members of the staff, founded the “St. James’s Gazette,’” which he edited for many years. He was the author of several works.] £ '

TPer Press Association.’! DUNEDIN, Dec. 19. Mr E. G. Allen, ex-M.P. for Chalmers, died yesterday afternoon. The deceased first entered Parliament in 1896 and represented the constituency until last year, when he was defeated at the second ballot. He had resided in Port Chalmers for over 30 yeans and took an active interest in the welfare of the district. He was Mayor or the borough for about 11 years and had been Chairman of the Dock Trust for 19 years and a member of the harbot board since 1888. He is survived bj one daughter and three sons. ,
