SALVATION ARMY.
ANNIVERSARY OF GISBORNE CORPS.
The local corps of the Salvation Army celebrated- its 23rd anniversary yesterday with special services at the Citadel. Staff-Captain Orames conducted the services, and in the afternoon -presented ninety children of the Sunday School with .prizes won during the year. The Staff-Captain also commissioned 30 members of the local corips. There was a large attendance at the evening service,, when Staff-Captain Orames delivered a powerful address on the birth of Christ and His second coming. In the course of an eloquent discourse he declared that the message of “Peace on earth, and goodwill towards men” had need to be remembered in these days, when the nations were pburing out money like water in order to provide means to slay their brothers.
To-morrow evening the anniversary tea will be held/ and will be followed .by a meeting at which an especially attractive programme will be -presented. At 3.30. on Wednesday afternoon a Christmas tree will be held at .the Citadel. This will be. more especially for the children of those parents who cannot afford Christmas .presents. It was announced last night that free tickets would be sent to all such children whose names were forwarded to Adjutant Melksham. Donations of toys for the Christmas tree will be welcomedin order to gladden the hearts of little ones whom Santa Claus may be unable to find time to visit.
