ESTATE OF JOSHUA LAWRENCE

The following statement has been filed with the Official Assignee (Mr J. Ooleman) by Joshua Lawrence, produco dealer, bankrupt:—“l arrived in this district over five .years ago and went to work on a station for wages. About three years ago I purchased a section on Kaiti, upon which I caused to be erected a dwelling house, subsequently mortgaged by me for £250. About tins time I entered into partnership with Mr. W. J. P. Gaudin, at Gisborne, as produce dealers, under the style of Lawrence and Co., and a large portion of the money raised on mortgage went into the partnership business. Subsequently Mr. Gaudin sold out his interest to another person, with the result that I made an agreement with Mr Gaudin to pay for his share, and I gave him promissory notes of about £65. I then sold niy Kaiti property, and put the whole of the purchase money into my business. I met Mr. Gaudin’s first promissory note of £25. The business was a failure, and 1 sustained great losses in the produce and also in fruit. Lately Mr. Gaudin sued me for the balance due to him, and under the circumstances I was advised to file. The assets were as follows: —Stock in trade £IOO, book debts £SO. estimated to produce £4O, total £l4O. The amount of debt "is £147 0s 9d, leaving a deficiency, of £7 0s 9d Unsecured creditors are as follows: Auckland creditors: J. M. Minnie, Ltd., £ll 15s 7d; Cahill and Co., fruiters, £4 11s 6d; C. Furniss and Co., confectioners, £7 15s sd; Hartman_ and Co., indent brokers, £3 Is 7d; G. Kronfeld, fruiterer, £10; C. J. Laurie, confectioner, £7 15s 9d. Gisborne creditors: E. Fisher, £4 3s lid; E. Jowers, £1 4s sd; E. Shelton, £3 3s 6d; deLautour. Barker, and Stock, £4; Gisborne “Times” Company.. £2O 10s;F. Hall and Son, £3 9s 6d; W. Clayton, £3 15s 6d; Gas Company 17s; D. J. Barry, £1 9s 3d; Kirk and Barnard, £1 Is; W. J. P. Gaudin, £45 10s lOd. Other creditors: Phoenix Co. (Dunedin), confectioners, £1 9s 6d; L. O. Gallaghan (Timaru), auctioneer, £8; H. Hamilton (Matawhero), £3 6s 6d.
