CRASHES INTO CLIFFS.

The Illawarra Company’s steamer • Eden arrived last night with her bow « badly smashed. , • The vessel crashed into a high cliff ; at Cape St. George during a dense fog. The forward bulkhead saved the steamer from sinking, with 100 passengers ; aboard. , Although the forward compartment was flooded the vessel was able to make port. The forefoot was completely torn away. T . v The cliff loomed out of the *og sud- , denly: • The a vessel was brought np ; standing before the order “full speed asterh” could be carried out. ' The shock threw‘many passengers off their feet. The boats were got out and ; the passengers served with lifebelts, but. the steamer'meanwhile- sheered off. Ah examination showed the .vessel to y-be .perfectly dry from the bulkhead aft.
