OPENING OF NEW WING

The ceremony of declaring open the recently completed addition to the children’s creche in Grey Street was performed yesterday by Mrs. Carroll. There was a large of ladies, chiefly members of the Women’s Guild. ~ The Mayoress (Mrs. W. D. Lysnar) expressed her pleasure at bemg present on such an occasion. The necessity for an extension of the building showed them how really the heme had been needed in Gisborne. She, called upon Mrs. Carroll to declare the addition open. Mrs. Carroll addressed the gathering in the Maori tongue, Mr : -W. E. Goffe acting as interpreter. She also voiced the pleasure she felt in being asked to open the addition to the creche, and congratulated all those ladies who had worked so hard and to such good effect. She specially congratulated the leader, Mrs. Townley, as well as all the ladies, for their work of love, which would tend to the betterment and uplifting of both races. She believed the child inmates of the home received every comfort, and she had great admiration for those ladies who had assisted _ the little ones to find a home. She wished long life and prosperity, also the compliments of the festive season, to all the ladies present. Mrs. Carroll then .proceeded to the door leading into the new wing, unlocked it, and threw it open. Standing on the threshold, she hade ail to enter, especially the little ones whose lives it was intended to make happy. The creche is at present permanently tenanted by 1-5 children, six of whom are infants'in arms, and there are also day children. The new addition, a day nursery, which has been built at the southern end of the house, has been found to be absolutely necessary, the present accommodation being much overtaxed.

Prior to the gathering breaking up, afternoon tea was dispensed, and greatlv enjoyed by those present. Mr. G. Smith wa s the contractor for the work.
