ANNIVERSARY TEA

The 23rd anniversary tea in connection with the Salvation Army too'k place yesterday in the Citadel. There was a fair attendance at the tea, and great justice was done to the excellent and sumptuous fare provided. The tables, which, were very daintily set out and decorated with flowers and ribbons, were under the supervision of Mrs. Smale and Miss Smale, Mrs. Burgess, Mrs. Eraser and Miss Brown at the visitors’ table, Mesdames Henzler, Sawyer. Grant, and Weir at the married ladies’ table, Misses Calcott. Huston, and Stuckey at the bachelors’ table, and Misses Stuckey and' Morgan and Mrs. Coleman at the single sisters’ table.

In the evening a social gathering was held, there being a good attendance. Mr. J. Townley presided, and apologies for absence were received from His Worship-the Mayor (Mr W. D. Lysnar), Mr W. L. Clayton, and others. In his opening remarks, the chairman again complimented the army on the excellent work they were doing, and expressed the pleasure it gave him to preside once more at such a gathering, seeing he had done so for many years. StaffCaptain Oraines spoke about the Salvation Army work generally, and made reference to several incidents where men had been saved and reformed in a. remarkable manner by tile care and attention of the Army. Speaking officially, he thanked them' for the very generous way in which they had assisted the annual anneal. Short addresses were also- given by His Honor Judge Jones and the Revs. W. Lamb and J. Graham (Matawhero). During the evening a\ number of musical items, including selections by the Band, were given, and the gathering passed off a complete success. This afternoon, at 3.30, a free gift Christmas tree will be set up at the Salvation Army Citadel, -and overy child presenting a ticket, of wliTch numbers have been distributed, will be entitled to some suitable Christmas •present. - r '
