ESSAY PHIZES
At the Gisborne School yesterday
afternoon, in the presence of a number of members of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to ~ -Animals, the prizes won in connection with the essays written under the auspices of the Society were presented by Mr. C. A. deLautour, who spoke on the merits of the .essays, and impressed upon-the children the good that could be done by 'kindness to animals. He was pleased that an endeavor was being made to form a junior branch of the Society, and trusted this would soon be accomplished. The prizes were then distributed as follows:
Standard Vl.—First prize (tie) Essie Scott (Mangapapa) and Alice How Chow (Central); 2nd prize, Irene Lunn (Central); 3rd prize, Olive Wootton (Kaiiti) ; highly commended, Gladys Johnston, Rachel Fyson, and Leonard Harries (Central),, Muriel Winter (Mata whero). D. Downey (Kaiti) and Edith Bryce (Makauri). Sandard V. —First prize, Ivy Swainson (Makauri); 2nd prize. L. Renwick (Mangapapa); 3rd prize, Thomas Linklater (Makauri); highly commended, M. Fromni (Kaiti), Rita Suff (Matawhero), and Lawson Field (Makauri). Standard IV. —First prize, Roy Eaton (Central); 2nd prize, V. McFarlane (Matawhero); highly commended, Rutli Dunning, Leonard Ballantvne, and Desmond Lawless (Central), E. A. Butterfield (Makauri). Standard lll.—First prize, Nelly Reidy (Matawhero); 2nd prize, Jessie Owen (Central); 3rd prize, Vive Oven-« den and William Hawkins, (Central), a tie. ' ' .
