MILITARY SPORTS.
THE HURUMUA-TINIROTO GATHERING.
The Hurum.ua - Tiniroto . Military Sports Club will hold their second annual meeting on Janary Bth, 1910. The entries closed with the, secretary (Lieut, Small) on Thursday night, and a record number have been received, something like 120 entries having been sent in up to date. There are, however, a few more to come in on the closed entries. . The horse ,event s have proved very popular, and also the chopping, for which entries have; been received from all parte of the district. There are twenty competitors in* the horse leaping and five squads in the squad competition.,, It is expected that Lieut.-Colonel Porter, C. 8., will do the judging of the military events. The Wairoa Band will be conveyed to and from the ground by Mr. Andrew’s coaching firm, Wairoa. The Hangaroa and Tiniroto troops are to muster on the day. of the sports, together with the other wings of the squadron, for an inspection parade. The running track lias been prepared and is now in firstclass order. A challenge, chop on a two-foot log. is to take .place on .the sports ground between H. Jones , and R. Lloyd, for £5-aside, Lloyd getting. 70sec start. Coaching .arrangements are-being made, and people from Gisborne and district are advised to book seats at the Masonic stables for the round trip Gisborne, Wairoa, Morere, and . back., They will be able to see the famous Te Reinga falls arid the Morere hot, springs. The Maoris are making extensive arrangements .for: the occasion, and a haka of welcome by the Te Reinga Maoris will take place. It is expected that tlie Hon. T. P. Maliuta, M.L.C., and Rua will be present at the gathering.
