AXEMEN'S ASSOCIATION.

ANNUAL CARNIVAL

[Ter Press Association.] ELTHAM, Dec. 27

There was ideal weather for the first day of the New Zealand Axemen’s Association’s annual carnival, and a record attendance. The principal events decided to-day were: — World’s Championship Chop, 2ft standing blocks —Dave Pretty, of Hamilton, who secured the championship last year, agin won: J. E. Richardson, of Motu, second j Sam Johnson, of Gisborne (runner up last year), third; and Esau Pretty (Morrinsville), fourth. Time, omin 5 l-ssec. The double-handed sawing championship of Australasia, 2ft logs, was won by A. Sullivan and D. Carlson. Time, 43see.

The New Zealand championship chop, 12in standing blocks, resulted: First heat, Sam Johnson 1, Tom West 2; second heat, Geo. McCauley I,’ Dave Prettv (present holder) 2; third heat, Joe Nestroski 1, W. H. Hughes 2. The final will bo decided to-morrow.

Maiden Chop, 15in blocks.—B. Nestroski 1, K. A. Mclvor 2, G. Hill 3. Time, lmin Slsec. Maiden Single-handed Sawing, 18in logs.—Dave Pretty 1, F. D. Johnston 2,' W. Hughes 3. Underhand Handicap Chcfp, 18in logs.—Sam Johnson 1. C. F. A. Vdlzke 2, F. D. Johnston 3. Time, 2min 38 1-osec.

Single-handed Sawing Handicap, 2ft logs.—A. E. Sullivan 1, Charlie Volzke 2, A. Carlson 3. 'Time, 2min 40 1-5 sec.

Red beech wa s the timber, used for the first time, and did not give the same satisfaction as white pine, the times consequently being slightly slower. To-morrow’s programme includes the axemen’s championship of £l5O. The town "was gaily decorated, and elaborate arrangements, had been made in anticipation of the Governor’s visit, but His Excellency was prevented from coming through Parliament sitting.
