The following is the High Commissioner’s cable, dated December 24th The mutton and lamb markets are dull. Very little business is doing. There is no change in prices (last quotations Canterbury mutton 3|d to 4sd, North Island 3§d; Canterbury lamb 3£d, other New Zealand 3£d). •'•i The beef market is weak. New Zealand hindquarters average 3-Jd per lb, forequarters 2-|<l. The butter market is firm, with improved demand. The average price of choicest New Zealand butter is ,112 s per cwt Danish 1275. The cheese market is weak and inactive. New Zealand finest white cheese averages 55s per cwt, and colored 545. , r The hemp market is quiet, but steady, with no change in price*-, (last quotations: New Zealand good fair on spot £23, fair £27, Manila £27. Januarv-March good fair £27 10s, fair £2O, Manila £26). The' week's output of. Manila hemp was 30,000 bales. The kauri gum market is firm, with more inquiry. Current quotations are: Ordinary to fair three-quarter scraped £8 5s per cwt, fair half scraped £5 ss, brown fair half to three-quarter scraped 90s, pickings common to good 4-Os, bush fair to good, pale and amber scraped £7 15s.
