AREAS AND ESTIMATED YIELDS. A report on certain of the Dominion’s corn and grain crops appears in the “Gazette.” This shows the areas on December 10th and the estimated yields to be as follow s (the figures for this year are estimated and those for last year actual): WHEAT. Aren. 1909- ... 225,035 1908-9 ... 220,240 Incr’sed area 4,795 There is a large increase in the area of peas in Marlborough and of maize in Auckland and Taranaki. The season has been highly favorable and the condition of the crops generally is better than at the corresponding date last year; the exceptions are the .Awatere Valley (Marlborough) and Central Otagoj in which localities, deficient rainfall has caused very light yields. Rust has appeared in cereal crops in several districts, but serious effects are not feared. Caterpillars have manifested themselves in parts of Marlborough but the visitation is not regarded ‘ with great apprehension. Early turnips in some localities have been seriously injured by! aphis. Potato disease is reported to be prevalent in several localities. _ The condition of pastures generally is exceptionally, good, and the liay crop is abundant and-being saved in excellent order. . Rain .is-.-beginning .to;, be needed xor. the; ljiain turnip, crop, a s . well as for pastures on light soils or exposed situations. and would also benefit crops generally. A further interim report will be issued in January.
