PROBABLES t. POSSIBLES. : In view of tlie representative fixture ■with Hawke’s Bay on Friday and Saturday next, an all-day practice match ■was played at Victoria Domain yesterday. The Probables, captained by It. G. Hallamore, batted first, and ran „up the respectable total of 194. A. Young and H. Babbs put on 64 .for the first wicket, giving the side a good start. Young totalled 62 before being bowled by Bisdee. Young batted sound, ly until he had reached 40, but then gave a couple of easy chances, one at mid-on and the other over the bowler’s head. Both chances' were dropped off Bisdee’s bowling. L. McMahon played ■a very, solid innings, for; 51, not out, a chance of stumping and a snick past the "wicketkeeper being the only blemishes in a good batting display., Babbs (25), Lasker (10), and Papps (10) were the other chief scorers. Bisdee. was by far the most successful bowler on the Possibles’ side. He mixed his deliveries well, and captured six wickets for 64 runs, off 18 overs. The Possibles made a poor stand against the bowling of Manning and McMahon, and were ' all dismissed for 56 runs. S. McConnell, who hit confidently and well for 28, was the only man to score-double figures. Manning secured five wickets for 15 runs, and McMahon five for 37. The Probables fared badly in thensecond innings, and quickly lost five wicket s for 29 runs, when the innings was declared closed. ’Bisdee again bowled well,' sending down 36 balls, off which he secured three wickets for four runs. At call of time the Possibles had scored 71 for the loss of four wickets. The catching during the day was not good, and would suggest that fielding practice is urgently needed by a number of the players. THE POVERTY BAY ELEVEN. The sole selector .(Mr. W. A. J. -Gibson) has chosen the following eleven to represent Poverty Bay in the annual match against Hawke’s Bay, to he played on the Taruheru ground on Friday and Saturday next: A Bisdee (Rakauroa). H. Babbs (Wanderers). , A. R. Barker (Y.M.C.A.). ‘F. W. Farrell (United). W. A. J. Gibson fUrnted). R. G. Hallamore (United). C. Lasker (Taruheru). L. McMahon (Wanderers). S. McConnell (Wanderers). L. W. Manning (United). A. Young (Wanderers). —Emergencies.— S. G. Glennie (Wanderers), E. Colthart (Waingake), and.. E. Sharpies (Taruheru). The team is a strong all-round combination. With the exception of Farrell, who is included as a left-hand bowler, the batting is strong throughout, while no less than seven regular club bowlers are included in the eleven. There is variety in the attack, fast, medium-paced, and slow right and left-hand bowlers being included in the team. The eleven is also particularly strong in wicket-keeping, possessing three capable stumpers in Hallamore, •McConnell, and Bisdee. PLUNKET SHIELD—AUCKLAND v. WELLINGTON. . TPeu Press Association."! The heavy rain of Saturday left the pitoh on the heavy side, so much so that Reese, the Canterbury Skipper, on winning the toss, sent his opponents in to bat. There was only a moderate attendance in the) morning, but after lunch it improved. The umpires were Messrs Hardy and Hooper. The opening was somewhat sensational, three, of Otago’s best batsmen being disposed of; for comparatively small scores. . Macfar lane, who was looked upon as one of the safest run-getters -for Otago, was log-before to Carlton with only eight on the board. Macartney, an Australian eleven player, had only made .five when he hit one hard and low into tlie; deep field, where Park running back brought off a splendid catch. Huddlestone, another. Otago mainstayer, had only made a single when he was well caught and bowled by T. Carlton. Siedeberg then joined) his skipper, and these two improved the Otago outlook considerably.
