Yesterday was a field day for the members of the Turanganui Bowling Club, play being indulged in all day. The rinks were fully occupied, and .some splendid games were played". There was a large attendance in the afternoon of the lacly friends of the members. Afternoon tea was furnished by the club, and was much -appreciated.. Tlie first round of the Pennant Fours was played, the second round of the Handicap Pairs was completed, and a match was played in the Bennett Cup competition. * The results were: — —Pennant Fonrs. —
H. Martin, W. H. Douglas, J. D. Jeuno, and J. Colley (skip) 25. beat J. B. Leydon, W. McPherson, M. A. Neill, and W. Ratcliffe (skip) 16. —The game was very even in the early stages, when on the 7th head the score showed 4 all. Then Ratcliffe got a lead, on, and was Bto 4 on the 10th head. On the following head Colley’s team jint up a three, .and followed this up'with a seven, but Ratcliffe’s rink responded well with a four and a single, and the 14th head read—Colley 14, Ratcliffe 13. Colley’s four then got going, and scoring consistently won easily at the finish by nine points. V. Hooper, D. B. McSkimming, B. Hird, J., P, Williams (skip) 17 beat J. M. Lennon, R. 0. Skeet, C. J. Bennett, M. G. Nasmith senr (skip) 13. Greig junr played as substitute for V. Hooper, while E. Lewis and J. Greig acted in similar capacities for Lennon and Skeet! Nasmith’s team scored on the first four heads with a total of five points, but then their opponents got the jack, and Williams’ team scored for nine heads, the 13th head showing Williams 12; Nasmith 5. Nasmith’s four then made a good recovery, and the . 20th head showed a difference of one point—Williams 14, Nasmith 13. On the final head Nasmith lay four, but Williams trailed the jack with bis last bowl for three, and thus robbed his opponents of viotorv. G. Edwards, R. Thelwall, P. E. Hallam, J. J. Martin (skip) 22 beat W. Hay, W. Bruce, T. McConnell, A. Sawyer (skip) 15.—H. J. Finn and; R. McWhirter acted as substitutes for Edwards and Hallam, while Nasmith j'unr acted similafly for Bruce. Martin got tlie lead at the start, and gave Sawyer’s team an uphill fight. The former was 12 to 4 on the 10th head, 17 to 10 on the 16th head, and ultimately won by seven points. Neill (skip) (4 points) 16.—0 n the 6th head the pairs were level, but from this point the former pair showed their superiority, being 22 to 10 on the 15th head, and ultimately winning by eight points. M. A. Neill 24 beat W. McPherson 19.—Neill assumed the lead, and on the 7th head was 13 to 5. On the following five heads McPherson made a’ splendid recovery, and was 15 to 13 on the 11th head. A ding-dong “go” then ensued to the final head,' Neill overtaking his opponent, and winning by five points. . » The following is the position of the various players in the competition at the conclusion of the seventh week’s Plav:—B.
