ATHLETICS.
WAERENGA-A-HIKA SPORTS.
Despite the unpromising weather conditions lately, the day,was fine for the sports held yesterday, in aid of the funds of the Waerenga-a-liika Public Hall. There was a large attendance at the picturesque site selected at the back of the hotel at Waerenga-a-hilca and everything had been done by the secretaries, Messrs H. J. Lougher, and J. W. Watton, assisted by a committee to make the gathering a success. Amongst the trees many swings had been erected and these and race s organised during the afternoon helped to amuse the children. There were good entries for the races, and the many capital finishes showed that the handicapping had .been exceedingly good. : . Mclntosli these being especially appreciate*! by the -many, small holiday .makers to whom the athletic events were not of much account. Refreshments and luncheon were supplied on the ground in the best of, style by tile Co-Operative Bakery Co.; v ,' • ~V. The handieapper and starter, Mr; \y . Howard, and the judges, Mesrs T. .Leslie (athletic events), and' G, Witters (horse events) had a hard day’s work to perform, but xlid : • everythjirig in a highly creditable manner. Very good race, won by only about a foot, the same distance between second and third. . ' . / 100yds. Maiden.—R. Parsons 1, H. Davy and E. Simpson dead hea't. Nine
starters. . A, very close) finish, which bore out the ovidence of good handicapping.' 100yds. Open.—E. O’Neill (4yds.) 1, Feilder (Byds.)*2, f ßoe (Byds.) 3. From a bad start O’Neill got a good advantage and won fairly easy. • Time- lOsec. 200yds. AVaerenga-a-hika Handicap. —Feilder* (16yds.) 1. H. Davy (16yds.) 2, E. O’Neill (Byds.) 3. Time 19 1-osec. Eight starters. From a. very good start Feilder soon got a lead and, although pressed by Davy, was able to win by about two yards. Flag Race. —Competitors on horses to ride round six flags, pulling them up and placing them in barrels. Three heats took place, four in each heat. Result: Ist heat, D. McKenzie; 2nd heat, E. Hansen; 3rd heat, A, Thomson. Final:, McKenzie 1, Hansen 2. Quarter-mile Bicycle Handicap.—A. AVilkinson (10yds) 1, Stevenson (25yds) 2, Clapp (25yds) 3. Nine starters. A close finish, AVilkinson winning by about two yards, with about three yards between second and third. 300 yd Handicap.—F. Fielder (22 yds) 1, H.; Davy (20yds) 2, F. Everiss (15yds) 3. ' Six started. A good start. Fielder kept his lead, and won by about two yards, third man being a good way in the rear. Placed men only finished. , Leaping Competition, over three sets of hurdles, 3ft 6in.—Amy Bock 25, Mr. L. Newman’s Biddy 26, and Mr. A. McKenzie’s AVaihuka 26 got the points in the event. In the run-off Mr. L. Newman’s Biddy was declared the winner, with Mr. A. McKenzie’s AVaihuka second.
100yds Maternity Home Handicap. —A. Dandy (ser) 1, J. Grant (16yds) 2, F. Feilder (4yds) 3. Time, 10 1-5 sec. Twenty started. The winner made a good race, and fell just on the tape. High Jump.—Tug AVyllie 1, J. Ryan 2. Four competed. The jumping of the winners was extremly good, and Ryan made several attempts, but could not clear sft 4in ? which would have made him the winner.
Half-mile Handicap.—H. Davy (35 yds) 1, E. O’Neill (35yds) 2, C. Hyland (45yds) 3. Time, 2min 9sec. Fourteen started. Davy and O’Neill fought out a tight finish, there being only about a yard arid a-half between them at the post, third man several yards away. Thread-tlie-Needle Race. Competitors on horses to race about 200yds, return to ladies who thread needle, then race round flag and to winning post. —Thirteen starters. C. Titchen and Miss Titohen 1, E. Swainson and Miss Torrie 2, J. Mills and Miss Pritchard 3. Two heats were run, and the final was very exciting. Cigarette and Umbrella Race.—H. Beatson 1, E. Swainson 2, A. McKenzie 3. Seven starters. The result caused great laughter, the riders bringing the umbrellas back twisted out of recognition in many cases. For the 200yds, 300yds, and half-mile handicap points were awarded four for Ist and two for 2nd, and a special prize of £2 2s given. H. Davy and F. Fielder, with 8 points each, tied, and. elected to divide the prize.
A weight-guessing competition of three live sheep took place and brought many entries. The correct weight was 404Ub, and Mr. A. Candy (40oLb) was declared the winner. Mr. G. Witters (4071 b) and Mr. B. Mazengarb (4011 b) were the others nearest the correct weight.
TOKOMARU SPORTS. The Tokomaru sports gathering was held yesterday in fine weather. There was a large attendance of spectators, and the various events were got off well to time. The sports were held at the cricket ground. The 100yds Christmas Handicap was won by Geo. Oates, and Hautapu annexed the 120 yds Tokomaru Handicap. FEILDING SPORTS. [Pint Pur-sa Association.] FEILDING, Dec. 27. The weather was fine for the Boxing Day athletic sports. The results were as follows: — Sheffield Handicap.—AY. M. Cuff 1, R. McKenzie 2, AV. D. Shields 3. Half-mile Handicap.—F. Carroll 1, C. Hall 2, C. A. Jones 3. Manchester Handicap, 1 mile. G. Ohall 1, D. A. AVilson 2, V. Carroll 3. 220Yds Handicap.—B. Campion 1, A. E. Richleben 2, S. Barnes 3. 440Yds Handicap.—B. Campion 1, R. McKenzie 2, A. E. Richleben 3. Bicycle races were won by M. Janson (one mile), A. Schlayer (two miles), A. G. Donald (half-mile), and W. R. Brady (1-J miles). 1000 YARDS RECORD BROKEN. WANGANUI, Dec. 27. At the AVanganui amateur athletic sports to-day, G. Harding (Napier) broke the 1000 vards record ,by four seconds. The following are the results: of the principal events: —120yds, Martis 1, Stolir 2, Williams 3; 1000yds, Harding 1, Annabell 2, AVilliams 3; 7oyds, Stohr 1, Martis 2, Williams 3; 300yds, Martis 1, Keddel 2, Burdelcin 3; mile walk, Fitzgerald 1, H. Kerr 2.
