BOWLING.
GISBORNE CLUB. A oonsiderable number of the members of the Gisborne Club preferred the attractions of the green to any other on Saturday, and play was can-ied on during both morning and afternoon. During the latter period the enjoyment of the players was enhanced by a sumptuous afternoon tea. A game in the second round of the Handicap Pairs, one in the first round of the Handicap Singles, and another in the first round of the Colts’ Singles were played. The following were the results of the games played:— —Handicap Pairs.—
Zachariah and Hennessy (3) 30 beat T. Adair and Mackintosh (6) 25.—This was a very good contest. Mackintosh got a lead in the earlier heads, but Hennessy gradually drew level, and after a fine struggle on the closing heads ivon by five points. . —Handicap Singles.—
Eure (2) 25 beat Johnston (7) 23.—•• This game was well contested through, out, and was Avon on the closing heads. —Colts’ Singles.— Hoff 22 beat Kirk 17. —Ordinary Matches.—

The third round of the Handicap Pairs and the first round of fthe Handicap Singles must be completed to-day. TURANGANUI CLUB. Encouraged by the sunshiny Aveather of New Year’s Day, tlie members of the Turanganui BoAvling Club mustered in strong force on their green in Childers Road. Play Avas commenced at 10.30 a.m.j and with the luncheon interval was continued .to 6 p.m. Four rinks were occupied in the morning, and six in the afternoon. A number of ladies were .present, and took keen interest in the games. Afternoon tea Avas provided by Mr. J. P. Williams, and was kindlv dispensed by MeSdames Neill and Atkinson and Miss Atkinson, the refreshments being much appreciated. Besides the ordinary games, five matches in the Bennett Cup competition were played, the results being:— —Bennett Cup.—
M. G. Nasmith, junr., 21 beat W. McPherson 14.—Nasmith assumed the lead, and on the 4th head was 6 to- 1. On the next eight heads McPherson pulled up some of the leeway, and was only two doAvn on the 12th head—-9 to 7. Nasmith then got a break on. and hud reached 21 to his opponent’s 8 on. the 19th head, Avinning easily on the final head by seven points. B. Hird (holder) 24 beat W- Ratcliffe 16.—Ratcliffe got going early, being 6 to 2 on the 4th head, and 11 to 4 on the Bth head. Hird steadied his play, arid then gradually crept up to liis opponent. till on the 13th head he overtook him Avith 13 to 12. Still keeping the jack he improved his position, until, by securing a four on the 18th head, he practically put the issue beyond doubt. Ratcliffe tried hard to retrieve his position, but? had to suffer defeat by eight points.
M. G. Nasmith, junr., 24 beat M. A. Neill 18.—Neill had decidedly the advantage of the early stag© of the game, for on the 7th head he was 8 to 2. Then. Nasmith got the jack, and with varying lengths got. in some good scoring, drawing level with 8 all on the 10th head. Three heads later on he had an advantage of five points—l 4to 9, and on the 16th head lea by 21 to 12. Neill mddc a splendid effort to overtake bis opponent on the last few heads, but bis opponent got in a three on the 20th head, and gave Neill no option but a defeat by six points. W. H. Douglas 27 beat W. McPherson 14.—This game was entirely in Douglas’ favor, who was 13 to his opponent’s nil on the Bth head, and 20 to 3on the 12th head. McPherson got closer to Douglas in the later stages of the game, but finally was defeated by 13 points. M. A. Neill IS beat W. Ratcliff© 17. —This was a splendid game,, the players being level on the 3rd head, 2 all, and 4 all on the 6tii head. On the 15tli head Ratcliff© was 13 to 9, and 15 to 12 on the 18th head. Getting in a three on the 19th head, Neill again drew level—ls all, and ho repeated his score of three on the following head. This left Ratcliffe throe to get to tie. He succeeded in obtaining two, and was thus defeated by the narrowest possible margin. The following is the position of the various players in the competition at the conclusion of the eighth week’s play:—B. Hird, 7 wins, 3 losses; M. A. Neill, 6 wins, 1 loss; W. Ratcliffe, 6 wins, 2 losses; J. J. Martin, 5 wins, 0 losses; M. G. Nasmith, senr, 4 wins, 2 losses; M. G. Nasmith, junr., 4 wins, 4 losses: A. Sawyer, 3 wins, 3 losses; W. H. Douglas, 3 wins, 8 losses; C. J. Bennett, 2 wins, 2 losses; W. Bruce, 2 wins, 3 losses; W. McPherson, 1 win, 3 losses ; T. McConnell, 1 win, 5 losses; J. P. Williams and P. E. Hallam, 0 wins. 1 loss; J. Colley, R. O. Sheet, and C. E. Lewis, 0 wins, 2 losses. V. Hooper has not 3 T ©t played a game. To-day the members of the club anticipate having another field day, play commencing at 10.30 sharp. It is expected that th© semi-finals in the Handicap Pairs and Pennant Fours will be commenced, and that further matches in the Bennett Cup competition will ensue. Afternoon tea is to be provided.
