LORD KITCHENER.

NO CEREMONIAL REVIEWS OR SPEECHES. United Pk'iss Association —Copyuight. BRISBANE, Jan. 3. Lord Kitchener makes no speeches. At the civic welcome he briefly thanked the Mayor for his reception, and proposed the Mayor’s health. It has been semi-officially announced that at none of the functions which he attends unless they are of high importance, must Lord Kitchener be expected to make speeches. Lord Kitchener yesterday , visited Lytton camp, where 1800 troops had a church parade. The local military authorities had prepared a ceremonial review to-day, with carefully rehearsed effects, but Kitchener of Khartoum is not viewing things that way. He intimated that he would issue his orders at midnight for the work of to-day. He did not wish to have ceremonial reviews. A STRENUOUS DAY’S WORK. -(Received January 4, 1.10 a.m.) Lord Kitchener provided the troops at Lytton camp, consisting of light horse and infantry, with a strenuous day’s work, operating against a supposed force landing from a hostile fleet at Cleveland, .20 miles from camp, and marching upon Brisbane. Expecting surprise orders, few officers went to bed. The turn-out was at 2in the morning. By 3 o’clock the whole force was on the march. For several hours it was kept busy in manoeuvres over difficult country. The evident inten-tion-of the Field Marshal was to test the mobility of the force, the stamina of the men, and the resourcefulness of the leaders.
