MR. HUGHES GIVES SOUND

Mr Hughes is following on the heels of Mr. Bowling, addressing the Southern miners. He is having a mixed reception with strong opposition at some meetings. Mr. Hughes strongly reiterated’ his opposition to a strike in the South and opposition to a general strike. The Southerners had come out in support of the Northern men. If they insisted not to go back till their grievances were redressed so that all would go back together, they would have to wait till the day of judgment.

The Broken Hill Block Ten Mine closes on Saturday owing to the shortage of coal, throwing 500 men idle and making, with those thrown idle at the closing of the Southern mine a total of 1500.

THE MARAMA DELAYED. (Received January 8, 1.6 a.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 7. The work of loading the Manama was delayed for four hours this morning owing to the wharf laborers being under the impression that the bunker coal, obtained at Newcastle, was nonunion. At a meeting of the Wellington Wharf Laborers’ Union to-night a motion was' proposed that £2OO be voted to the Newcastle coal strikers’ fund. Objection was taken to one-fourth of the Union’s funds being given for this puroose, and the vote was reduced to £IOO, in addition to £lO per week being granted as long as the men are out on strike'.
