RETIREMENT OF CAPTAIN BERNECH. [Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Jan. 9. The retirement from active service is announced of Captain John Bernecli, the veteran skipper of the Union Co.’s fleet, who was appointed to the command of the Beautiful Star on March 3rd, 1876. He_ was afterwards transferred to the Maori and Maliinapua, and in January, ISSS. be was transferred to the command of the Oban, remaining with that vessel for four years. For many years he was in the Penguin, and he subsequently commanded the Te Anau.Tarawera, Talune, Waikare, and Mouowai. He had to come ashore owing to illness at the end of last October. Captain Bernech was the oldest master afloat in the service of the company, with which he had been associated since its flotation. His career lias been conspicuous in its freedom from accidents. and it is stated he was the best coast master the company had. [Captain Bernech is well known in Gisborne, having called here regularly in the steamers, from the Te Anau to the Monowai, which he commanded on the East Coast- trade. There are many Gisborneites who will regret tlie retirement- of the fine old sailor, and who wish him speedy recovery from his ailments.]
