THE DOMINION REVENUE.

AN INCREASE FOR LAST QUARTER. rpicn Phess Association.! INVERCARGILL, Jan. 9. Sir Joseph Ward 1 stated to a reporter that the figures for the Treasury for the last quarter were closed, and that the revenue results were satisfactory. The amount received for the quarter was £2,047,0/3, or £00,653 more than for the December quarter last year. The analysis of the revenue for the nine months, as compared with the corresponding period of last year, is: 1909, £0,445,311; 190 S, £0,421.02b; increase. £24.253. To this lia, to be added £67,042 from national endowments, which gives an increase for the nine months of £91,425. The increases are; Land and income _ tax £55,365, railways £185,753, miscellaneous £31,053.- There are, however, decreases as follows: Customs £l--071, stamps £54,865, beer duty £l4ll, registration and State fees £24,51/. marine £429, territorial £24,595, lliis represents an increase on the one hand of £272,171, and a decrease on the other of £247,888, making a «et increase for the nine months, of A feature of the figures is that the increase for the December quarter alone is £55,685. SIR JOSEPH'WARD’S OPINION. The Prime Minister expressed his sxtisfaction with the revenue returns tor the past nine months. The fact that last quarter showed such a satisfactory increase is, in his opinion, an indication that better times had followed the period of depression through which the Dominion had passed, and strongly pointed to the corner having been well turned. As Minister of Finance lie was very gratified at the results which should inspire the people of the country with renewed confidence, and there was no reason why they should not continue the steady progress which- had produced such excellent results for the December quarter. This, added to the fact that nine months of 1909, as compared with the same period of 190 S, showed the improvement which he had indicated, clearly demonstrated, that there had been improved conditions during the whole of that period.
