OBITUARY.

MR- EDWARD WM. EASLEY

News was received in town on Saturday cf the death, at Nelson, on Friday evening, of a former Gisborne resident, Mr. Edward Wm. Easley, father of Mr. G. K. Easley, secretary to Messrs Common, Shelton and Co. The late Mr. Easley was born in Bengal Eresidency, India, in 1830, and was the third son of Colonel G. J. Easley, of the 49th Foot. He was educated at Bath, England, and in 1851 came to New Zealand in the ship Maori, landing at Nelson. For four years ho remained with his uncle, who was farming, and afterwards took up sheepfarming in the Wairau district till 1863. The following year he joined the Customs department at Nelson as a junior clerk, and worked himself up to the position of landing waiter at that port. In 1876 he was -ppointer Collector of Customs at Blenheim, and was transferred to Gisborne in December, 1594. He retired in 1901, after about 40 years’ service, and removed to Nelson, the scene of his earliest days in the Dominion. The deceased gentleman had been suffering from ill-health for the past lew months. Mr. G. K. Easley left by the Monowai last evening for Napier, en route to Nelson. MR. WILLIAM KEN WAY. News has come to hand of the death at Broadstairs, Kent, on November 23rd last, of Mr. Wm. Kenway, a pioneer of this district, and a brother of Messrs F. and IT. Ken way.. The deceased gentleman spent much of liis early life in the Eoverty Bay district, being the first settler to pitch his tont°in the Wainmta Valley, after the Government sold the land in ISB2. Mr Kenway later went to the Argentine, but returned to New Zealand, and took up the run now held by Mir. J. C. Field. He afterwards left New. Zealand for West Australia, and then took up fruit growing near Bridgetown. where his health gave way, and for the last few years ho has been in indifferent health. MRS. R. B. MACKENZIE.
