LIGHTS THAT FAILED

Lord Kitchener’s inspection of Sydney’s defences included a trip round the harbor at night to see the working of the electric searchlights of the various forts. He was accompanied by his staff and the heads of the Commonwealth forces. Lord Kitchener embarked on a steamer and made the trip, but for some unexplained reason the lights failed'to work. An inquiry will be held.

AN INTERESTING INCIDENT

It is rumored that when Lord Kitchener was inspecting the Sydney harbor defences, he asked why there was no fort on the North Head. He was informed that it would be so isolated from the rest of the defences that it could be easily cut off and taken, and its guns turned against Sydney. Lord Kitchener is said to have replied: “If an enemy could land and take the fort, he could do so if there is no fort, land guns, and turn them on Sydney.” THE FIELD MARSHAL LEAVES SYDNEY. Lord Kitchener has departed for Lithgow, where he will inspect the site of the proposed small arms factory. Thence he proceeds via Bathurst to Melbourne. A meeting of citizens to-day decided to cable 'to Lord Kitchener to inquire what he would prefer in the way of entertainment while in Christchurch, a garden party, a banquet, or the presentation of an address.
