THE POVERTY BAY TEAMS.
(Special to “Times.”) TE ARO, Jan. 10. The first, day’s play of the tournament- was characterised by splendid wea_ ther and in consequence the greens were keen. The opening ceremony was very formal. In section Gon the Wellington green Turanganui started off with a win against Tliorndon. This game was. characterised by small scoring, for 011 the 4th head the teams were 2 all, on the 9th head 5 all. Tliorndon was 10 to 9 011 the 17th head, and 12 all on the 20th head. On the final head Nasmith lay 2, but Munro, the third, faced the shot bowl through. Martin rested Munro’s ball, obtained two and victory by 14 to 12. In Turanganui’s other games they were vanquished by Victoria by 22 to 16 and by Carterton by 25 to 10. Victoria- obtained a five on one head- and Martin on one occasion failed to take out a ball that lay against six. The Carterton team’s victory was due to their skip, who both drew and drove deadly. They got a five and a six against Turanganui by driving tactics. Luck was also with them, for on two occasions the skip went wide when Turanganui were lying two fours and nicked in and got the shot. Turanganui meet Churchward (Wellington), Rankin (Wanganui) and Kilgour (Carltoil) to-morrow. The general opinion is that Kilgour or Churchward will wil this section. In the J section Ponsforcl’s rink went down' before McLeod, of Ponsonby, by a few points. In tlie afternoon his team were on their mottle when they met Webb (Wellington). On one head the Gisborne team got in no less than seven bowls, all of which could have been covered by a hat. This game saw a sensational finish. On the 20th head the teams were 20 all, and on the final Webb lay the one to win, but Ponsrord drew a splendid shot and obtained victory. Later Ponsford had a good win against Smith, of Napier, by 24 to 17. To-morrow Gisborne will meet Moult (Wellington), Lock (Te Hiwi) and Brae, kenbridge (Newtown).
