FIRE AT REAIUERA
[Pint Puf.ss Association.] AUCiiii.-i.NI), Jan. 13. A five-roomed house at Remuera, occupied by W. H. Robinson, and owned by R. L. Cleland, was totally destroyed by fire last night. A similar cottage adjoining was damaged to the extent of £IOO. The insurances were £250 in* the Phoenix office on each cottage. There were policies on the furniture in the two buildings, £BO in the New Zealand office and £IOO in the United Office. THE APPROACHING EPISCOPAL CONSECRATION. NAPIER, Jan. 13. The Angitcan Primate (Bishop Nevill) arrived this evening from Dunedin in connection with the consecration of Archdeacon Averill as Bishop of Waiapu on Sunday. WANGANUI PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. WANGANUI, Jan. 13. The Rev. J. D. McKenzie, M.A.8.D., late of C-olac, Victoria, was to-day inducted into the pastorate of St Paul’s Presbyterian Church. FEILDING’S FIRE RECORD. FEEDING, Jan. 13. In 1909 ten places were totally destroyed or partially destroyed by fire in Feilding or suburbs. The Government training ship Amokura in a fortnight is to visit the depots for castaways at the Snares, Auckland, Canrabell, Antipodes, and Bounty Islands. This work has hitherto been carried out by the Government steamer Hinemoa. A NEW COAL COMPANY. The Waipa Railway and Collieries Company, with a nominal capita] of £BO,OOO. has been registered here, and shares allotted, for the purpose of working coal deposits at Te Akatea. in the Waikato, five miles from the Alain. Trunk line. CONCILIATION COUNCIL DOES GOOD WORK IN DUNEDIN. DUNEDIN, Jan 13. The Conciliation Council this morning ratified the agreement effected yesterday in the conference between the New Zealand Clothing Manufacturers’ Association and the workers. The agreement becomes operative as an award from February 1 until May 23, 1912. The main terms are: Hours of work, 45 weekly; minimum wages, second class chart cutters £3 weekly ; stock cutter and trimmer. £2 15s; examiner in charge of finishing room, £2 12s 6d ; no piece or contract work is to be allowed, but (provisions are made for overtime. Apprentices stock-cutting and trimming are to serve five years, beginning at 10s weekly, and rising to 40s in the fifth year. * Provision is made for underrate workers. Preference to unionists is granted. GOLDEN BAY CEMENT WORKS. The Golden Bay cement works, about to be erected at Limestone Bay. Nelson. will be driven electrically throughout' Tiie contract for a complete power plant (£1500) has been secured by Turnbull and Jones, electrical engineers. This will be the first cement works in the Dominion to instal their own private electrical plant for driving the cement-making machinery. A SUITABLE DONATION. GORE, Jan. 13. Yesterday Air. Anderson, AI.P., on behalf of 'Airs. Seddon, presented a portrait in oils of the late Air. Seddon to the Seddon Alemorial hospital, Gore. He referred to the deceased stateman’s humanitarian work, especially the establishment of the St. Helen’s hospitals, and legislation on behalf of the aged and needy. GREATER INVERCARGILL. INVERCARGILL, Jan. 13. At the first- business meeting to-night of the Greater Invercargill Council it was decided not- to have the ward system, but. one undivided municipality. It was also decided to retain the staff of the central borough and add other members from the suburban staffs if ne. cessarv.
