By some means the gas escaping from No. 2 bore of the Taranaki Petroleum Company was ignited ;at l.so this afternoon while boring opsrations, at a denth of nearly 3000 feet, were in progress. The whole structure was m imminent danger for some hours, but eventually the Are -was suppressed by steam. Large gangs of men worked continuously in smothering the bore with clay. The oil wells wore later visited by the Hon. G. Fowlds. ■ The damage was ultimately very trifling.
