The result will he known a.t the end of February. 7 ENCOUNTER MEMORIAL. A memorial to the bluejackets of the warship Encounter, who lest their lives in the harbor disaster last year through the collision of a pinnace with the steamer Dunmore, has been unveiled at the Rookwood cemetery.
NEW MAIL CONTRACT
MELBOURNE, Jan. 14. The manager of the Orient Company, at a conference with the PostmasterGeneral, made final arrangements for a new mail contract, which comes into operation on February 11th. The company accelerates the speed between Adelaide and Westralia, ami equips its steamers with wireless apparatus as soon as stations at Fremantle and Sydney are established. A STEAMER. ASHORE. The steamer Manawatu is ashore at Anderson’s Inlet. All hands are safe. The chances of refloating the steamer are doubtful. SIR FREDERICK PARLEY'S SUCCESSOR.

The Hon. "W. P. Pullen succeeds the late Sir Frederick Darley 7 as Chief Justice. (Received January 15, 12.50 a.m.) The new Chief Justice is a doctor of law, and has been for many years prominently connected with the legal and political life of the State. He holds a seat in the Legislative Council. Prior to liis appointment to the Upper House he was a member of the Assembly. RAIN IN NEW SOUTH WALES. There has been another day of steady incessant rain, with no indication of the weather breaking. ’ The position at Broken Hill, where a water famine was threatened, has been relieved by a good fall.
