The steamerJßipple arrived at Lyttelton this morning from the Chatham Is. lands somewhat earlier than she was expected. Captain Allsop reported that, the steamer left- Lyttelton on the evening of Monday the 3rd inst., and, after a fine weather trip, reached Waitangi at 5 a.m. on Thursday the 6th inst. After landing her passengers and cargo the vessel left Waitangi at noon the same day and proceeded on a tour round the. group to load wool. In accordance with the arrangement made by the Marine Superintendent with the owners of the Ripple, Captain Allsop made an exhaustive and thorough search for possible traces of castaways or wreckage from the missing fishing steamer Duco. Variable weather was experienced and the Ripple crossed round all the main islands as -well as the outlying islrnds, reefs and rocks, including the “Sisters” and the “Forty-fours”, but absolutely no trace of any castaways or wreckage of anv kind was found. Captain Allsop stated that since his previous visit to the Chathams two or three packages of timber which the Duco was carrying, for making fishing crates, had been washed ashore on the west side of the Main Island.
