RATHE PICTURES. To-night at His Majesty’s Theatre the Patlie Pictures .rill re-open after an absence of four nights. For the occasion a new programme has been prepared, which isi sure to be of a very high standard of excellence. The star item is a film depicting “Nick Carter,” the King of Detectives in a famous jewel robbery, and is of a most sensational and exciting character. Another film tliati should be of great interest shows Latham, for the second time trying to cross the Channel in his aeroplane. This showj the daring aviator awaiting favorable weather, getting ready, and then eventually, the start. A splendid view is given in midchannel taken front the deck of a torpedo destroyer. Then comes the accident- The drop into the channel ami finally a view of all that remained after being fished out of the water. Two good industrial subjects are to be shown, namely, “The Hemp Industry” and “The Honey Industry,” the latter being a fine descriptive series showing the preparation of an artificial comb, the change of domicile, the wax harvest, apparatus for extracting the honor and finally the honey being put into jars and casks. The dramas of this programme are particularly strong, “The Diamond Maker,” “The Hotel Thief” and “The Foundling” being the titles of the most important. A delightful scenic series of Calcutta is one of Messrs Patlie Freres’ latest- productions, introducing views of this beautiful city in quite a novel way. An instructive picture of a quaint nature which will appeal strongly to the ladies is entitled “Hats of all ages.” This film, which is magnificently colored, displays the feminine head gear as worn during the past 100 years. This programme can only be shown to-night and to-n.orrow night.

HACKEXSCHMIDT. Under the direction of Messrs Baker and Talbot- Hackensckmidt ; the worldfamous athlete, appears in Gisborne next Monday and Tuesday evenings. The presence of Hackensehmidt in New Zealand is sure to create a muchneeded revival iii wrestling and athletics generally. The popular Russian arrived in this country on the 16th inst. by the Maheno, from Sydney, where he has been appearing with conspicuous success in a very attractive programme, which includes exhibitions of wrestling, physical training exercises, posture posing, muscle culture and t-lie many feats of endurance by which Haokonschmidt has proved lnmself justly famous. Accompany ng “The Russian Lion.” as trainer, is Gunner Moir, and his chief wrestling partner is Bain, the Scottish _ giant. Hackenschniidt’s principal object in visiting Australasia was to meet Gotcli in a contest for the championship of the World and a purs« of £SOOO offered by Messrs Baker and Talbot, of Melbourne.

This match was mutually agreed upon, and duly drawn up, as far back a« May last, and should have taken place this month in either Melbourne or Sydney. It- was for a. time held up owing to Gotch cabling he had to undergo an operation, which it was further stated would necessitate'.a 12 months’ rest. It transpired, however, that Gotch had met Pacevitoh. the Italian champion, and defeated him in the interval. Goteh’s unexpected return to form prompted Messrs Baker and Talbott to cable to America, suggesting the necessity of Gotch meeting Hackenschmidt as arranged. To this and other communications’ the promoters are, however, unable to obtain a definite reply: and, as previously stated Hackenschmidt. is to open a season of two nights at His Majesty’s Theatre on Monday evening, in his unioue athletic demonstrations, supported by Gunner Moir and Herman, together with a specially selected company of Loudon entertainers. Films of Hackenschmidt’s recent- contests will also form part of this interesting entertainment. The box plans open at Miller’s* next Tlmrsday. -
