FLOODS IN CONSEQUENCE OF RAIN. UnitKd Piiess Association— Copyright. SYDNEY, Jan. 15. As a result of the rain the rivers are rising' rapidly. Floods have occurred in Tamworth, and numerous railway washaways are reported. Other States have benefited by the fall, three-fourths of the Continent (participating. There are floods in the northern rivers, and railway and telegraphic communication avith Queensland is cut off. SEVERAL LIVES LOST. (Received January 17, 1.5 a.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 16. Telegraphic communication with the flooded districts is being restored. Reports slowly coming to hand show immense damage lias been done and several lives lost. The Railway Commissioners received a wire from Mo roc stating that four men were taking a boat alongside a ballast train which was surrounded by the flood. The boat capsized and all the occupants /were drowned. There are no details. A wire area, round Gunnedah is under water. Boats rescued people from the tops of stacks and houses, where they were seeking refuge. Numbers had narrow escapes. A rescue boat capsized and one man is missing. The damage at Tamworth is estimated at £30,000. Narrabri and other centres suffered severely. Many people were flooded out. Though, as far as possible, stock was removed to high ground, the losses are heavy. Today’s reports state that the floods are subsiding. The railway service is badly disorganised, there being numerous wash-outs, -which are being restored.
