FROZEN MEAT INDUSTRY.
THE QUESTION OF UNIFORM
GRADING
At the meeting of the Farmers’ Union held on Saturday afternoon, the question of the grading and selling of frozen meat on the London market was mentioned. Letters were read at length, from Ministers, freezing companies, farmers’ unions, and A. and P. societies, acknowledging receipt of a circular regarding the uniform grading. Mr. W. D. Lysnar, who presided, said the question was going to be a big one, be he hoped the farmers would come forward and support the matter in a proper manner. The proprietory freezing companies were entitled to same consideration, but the chief consideration was the farmers themselves. The chief fight would be around the attempt to have legislation passed regarding the control of the industry. There would certainly be a lot of opposition by the freezing companies on the question of Government grading, but there was no doubt that such grading would bo. of immense benefit not only to the people here, but to the buyers at Home. The fight would be a big one, hut he thought thev would come out on top as against vested interests. At any rate the system could not possibly do any harm.* It bad been most successful in both flax, butter and cheese industries, and would be a check on both factories and agents. It was decided that Mr. Lysnar represent the Gisborne Farmers’ Union at the coming conference on the subject, to be .held at Christchurch on January 27 and 28.
