THE BRITISH ELECTIONS.

The results of 'the polls in the English elections have so far indicated a very pronounced revulsion of feeling against the Government, and in favor of the Unionists. This was expected by most close students of political affairs, the only question being whether the gain made by the Unionists -would be sufficient to counteract the tremendous majority that was secured by the Liberals at last election. As .will be seen from the particulars published in our cable columns, the results in connection with 90 seats have been made known., These show the state of the parties, as nearly as can be judged meanwhile, to be Government and Nationalists 46, Unionists 44. At this rate it seems to us the Unionists, despite the remarkable progress they have made, can scarcely hope to score a win. Of the Irish vote, which numbers 103, it is almost certain that the Government will again secure more than SO, and of th e . 72 Scottish seats a substantial majority are likely to be on the same side. On the other hand it may be argued that as the Unionist gains have been made so far in the cities and boroughs—which generally speaking have been Liberal strongholds—the county results will bring an even greater measure of success for Mr. Balfour’s party. Altogether,* the outcome of the greatest political contest of the day is still quite uncertain, and will be until a larger number of results have come to hand.
