Owing to having been seized with illness, Mr. Hapi Ivinilia, Native assessor, was unable to attend at the opening of the Native Land Court yesterday morning.

A special meeting of the Coyk County Council will be held at- 2 p.m. on Thursday next to consider the proportionate contributions of the outer ridings, in connection with the maintenance of roads. The ordinary meeting of the Council will be on Friday next, at 10 a.m. Mr. Eustace Lane has, if the Govern-or-in-Council formally decrees it, forfeited his seat on the Land Board, by ihs absence from last meeting. The “Hasting’s Standard” states that, owing to the Government having failed to determine his status on the board, he is determined to bring the- matter to a head, and is contemplating taking a case to the Supreme Court. He will probably make a claim for £ISOO damages, being £1 per head for each ratepayer in his district. A number of dairy farmers from the ‘Te Arai seate waited upon Air. T. N. S B rod rick, CoiiTinissioner of Crown Lands, yesterday afternoon with the 'object of obtaining a Government grant to drain the lower part of the settlement. The deputation pointed out that the settlers were all prepared to assist, and had already done all they could to let off the water, which flooded [holdings after heavy rains to the depth of throe feet. The Commissioner suggested that the settlers should make an estimate of what was required to be done on each holding, and lie would then do his best to secure assistance from the Department, die thought the host plan would be for each settler to do what was necessary on his particular holding, which ’would ensure good and permanent work being done. The deputation thanked 'the Commissioner, and withdrew. A meeting of the directors of the ’Young Men’s Christian Associatoin was held last evening. Mr. F. S. Malcolm (president) presiding. The finance report stated that the overdraft had been reduced, and that contributions were coming in slowly. Arrangements were completed for taking over the bite recently acquired by the Association, formerly the property of the Poverty Bay Co-nperative Supply Assofciation. It- was reported that suitable tenants liad been secured for the corner shops. The directors arc planning ’that the winter session shall he specially attractive. The religious work is being Avell organised, and in connection with the educational features it is intended to revive the classes of the St. 'John’s Ambulance Association, of ■which Air. E. :H. Mann is the local 'secretary. The question was also fully discussed of holding public literary, elocutionary. and musical competitions during the winter, and steps are being 'taken to arrange these. In connection with the gymnasium, Mr. J. R. Kirk 'has made a presentation of a set of Sandow developers for competition in all-round improvement. ' The engagement of Mr. C. R. AVebster as general ‘secretary having terminated, lie was unanimously re-appointed to the position.

Barton b.M., Frederick Traill, previously convicted of a similar offence, and Edwin 1 raijl were convicted of cycling on. the AYainui Road footpath, within thcßorongh. In the former case a fine of 15s with bs costs, was imposed, and in the latter a fine of 10s with 7s costs.

The Native Land Court opened in Gisborne yesterday morning, under the presidency of Judge ■Jones, with* 740 cases set down for hearing. Alost of the morning was taken up in arranging the order or business. Several natives attended from Tologa Bav in regard to the Kopu •nui block, but the Court intimated that this would be taken anon the arrival or the Chief Judge. There were also a. number of natives present from the Mahia district. 2S cases were disposed of yesterday, and the Court then adjourned till this morning, and will sit from day to day till completion of Tiusiuess.
