A SWEET PEA SOCIETY. f Pint Press Association.] STRATFORD, Jan. 20. At a meeting of sweet pea growers, held here to-day, it was decided to form a New Zealand Sweet Pea Society. A committee, consisting of Messrs C. Goodson (Hawera), E. A. Osmond (Stratford), G. Holder (Porirua West), B. Scott (Ka.ponga.), W. C. Armstrong (Hastings), E. O. Bradheld (Palmerston North). G. W. Plummer (Auckland), and Dr. Garberry (Stratford) was appointed. HEAVY RAIN AT FEILDING. FEILDING, Jan. 20. There was a tremendously heavy rain-storm, here just before 1 o’clock. Many business places were, flooded, owing to the roof gutters being chocked. The street gutters were unable to carry away the water. Shops wore flooded, and considerable stock in the •hops wes destroyed. The weather is now clear, but uncertain. SLY GROG-SELLING AN ENPENSIVE CALLING. OKAHUNE, Jan. 20. ' Robert Warnes was to-day convicted and fined £SO on each of two charges of sly grog-selling, or three months’ hard labor. George McWilliams was fined £4O for a first offence, and £SO for a second one, and two .months’ hard labor; in all cases the sentence to be cumulative. - IMMIGRATION AND EMIGRATION. WELLINGTON, Jan. 20. The number of persons who arrived in the Dominion during last month was 5030, and the number of departures was 2302. The figures for December, 1908, were: Arrivals 5612, departures 2533. Arrivals and departures during the past two years were: 1909—Arrivals 38,650, departures 33,931; 1908 — Arrivals 44,970, departures 30,709. KAILWIAY AND ROAD EXPENDITURE. The Cabinet to-day authorised the expenditure of £34,079 on railway construction, £5229 on rolling stock, and £7265 on roads and bridges. NELSON MAYORAL ELECTION. NELSON, Jan. 20. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 20. A meeting of civil servants hero decided to form a horticultural society, tlie membership of which is to consist ■of persons employed by the- New Zealand Government. Dir. S. P. Stevens, chief postmaster, was elected first president. THE CHRISTCHURCH DOMAIN BOARD, The Domain Board intend discussing the desirability of approaching Parliament for authority to charge for admission to- H-aglev Park in l view of the possibility of the contest for the Davis Cup being played on the- United Club’s tennis courts in North Hagley Park.
