BOWLING.
GISBORNE CLUB. The muster of members of the Gisborne Bowling Club on their green yesterday afternoon was a large one, and play was continued till nearly sunset. Several match games wore got off besides a number of ordinary games. During the afternoon the following gentlemen were elected members of the club: Messrs F. T. Morgan (honorary), B. Taylor, A. Saunders, and J. Gosnell. Entries for the champion singles and the second handicap fours are to close on Thursday next, January 27th. For the latter .four pairs of silvermounted bowls, presented through Mr J. F. Pettie, are offered as first prize, and four silver measures, presented by Mr. M. Carr, as the escond prize. * The following were the results of the play yesterday: —Eure Stars.— Ivy me, W. Pettie, Craig, Simson (skip) (challengers) 19, beat Burton, Mackintosh, Hennessy, Eure '(skip) 10. —Handicap Pairs.— Wootton and Pavitt (10) 27, boat Zachariah and Hennessy (3) 24. —On the 12-th head Pavitt -was 23 to Hennessy’s 11. The latter -made a splendid rally, and put on 13 points to his opponent’s four. —Handicap Singles.— Zachariah (0) 24, beat Wootton (6) 22. —Colts’ Singles.— Grieve 19 beat Leslie 13. —Ordinary Matches.— Burton, R. G. Crawford, Craig, Ponsford (skip) 24, beat _ Shierlaw, Witt, Corson, Ifwerson (skip) 16. Malcolm, Gosnell, W. R. Clarkson, T. A. Crawford (skip) 26, beat Seymour, O’Meara, Smith, Bright (skip) 18. Townson, Bullock, Ambridge, Coleman (skip) 19, beat Gil-mour, •Williams, W. Pettie, Simson (skip) 15. TURANGANUI CLUB. There was a large attendance of bowlers -at the Turanganui Club’s rinks yesterday afternoon, when the club’s representatives at the tournament were welcomed back. The green was in fine order, and some excellent games were played. Afternoon tea was provided by Mrs. M. A. Neill, assisted by Miss Neill, and was much appreciated by players and a goodly number of ladies who were (present. Among the games played during the afternoon was a semi-final in the Handicap Pairs and four games in the Bennett Cup competition. The results were: —Handicap Pairs.— R. Tli el wall and j. J. Martin (skip) (scr) 23, beat W. McPherson and J. D. Jeune (skip) (2pts) 20. —On the 11th head Martin had a lead of two points—ll to 9, and on the 18th head had victory practically assured by 23 to 11. On the remaining three heads Jeune and his partner scored seven, and receiving a handicap of two points suffered defeat by three points. The final will be played next week between R. Tlielwall and J. J. Martin (scr) and V. Hooper and J. P. Williams (lpt). —Bennett Cup.— M. G. Nasmith, junr. (24) beat ,P. E. Hallam 16.—1 n this game Nasmith excelled in drawing and driving, and on the 13th head led by 13 to 2, winning easily at the finish by eight points. M. A. Neill 21 beat P. E. Hallam 13. —On the 9th head the scores were 7 all,~and then Neill drew away, leading on the 18th head by 21 to 13, when Hallam. threw up the game. W, Ratciiffe 26 beat W. McPherson 9. —This game .was Ratcliffe’s from the commencement, he being 16 to 4 on. the 10th head, and 26 to 9 on the 18th head, when McPherson retired, as the position was hopeless.. J. J. Martin 17 beat M. A. Neill 15. —This was an excellent game. Neill was 6 to 1 on the 6th head, but on the 14th head Martin drew level—-10 all. Again on the 16th head the players were even —13 all. On . the 20th head Martin was 16 to 15, and the last head was .played amidst great interest, when Martin drew the shot with his third bowl and won the game. —Pennant Fours. — The semi-finals in the Pennant Fours will be played to-morrow afternoon, when Nasmith junr’s rink meets Martin’s, and Coney’s four play Williams’.
