A Legend of the Raven.
,Ali legends* unite in. .declaring that the raven was originally white, and owes his present dusky plumage to the sin of meddling. The Greek story runs that Phoebus loved a beautiful maiden known as Coronis, and was happy in his love, believing it to be returned. But once, when ho v\nt on a journey, the raven, who was his bird, incensed at the infidelity of his mistress, flew in pursuit of his master, and told him the unwelcome truth. Phoebus, with anger and jealousy raging in his heart, came swiftly back, and without pausing to reflect, shot an arrow straight into the heart of his beloved; but no sooner did lie hear her cry of agony and see the crimson v stain; dying the white of her garments than he repented- of his hasty deed of vengeance, and, seeking for some means of expressing it, changed the snow-white plumage of the raven to funereal black.
