SPEECH BY MR. ASQUITH. United Pjiess Association — CorriUGirr. LONDON, Jan. 21. Mr Asqnitli, the Prime Minister, .in a speech at Ceres, •deprecated importing into electoral controversies the •supposed opinions of the colonies, whose far-sighted statesmen would be. the •first .to deprecate that any sort of pressure should appear to be exercised by them on the free judgment of the Motherland’s people. " An elector at Auehtermuchty asked whether Mr Asquith would say what he was prepared to do in the event of the House of Lords rejecting the Bill limiting the veto. Mr Asquith: “No, I will not. We will wait and see.-’ Mr Asquith, speaking at Ladybnnk, said he would say nothing regarding the general results of the election till the situation was more developed, but he expected that Birmingham and its sphere of influence, Liverpool, and one or two other isolated areas and the whole of the great centres of industry in England and Scotland would give an emphatic verdict in favor freetrade. ’.Replying to hecklers, he declared that he did not favor nationalisation of the railways. lie thought the present redistribution of members unjust. The time had come for an amendment. PRESS COMMENTS. The “Times” states: “The fictions in the Liberal speeches did not provoke Mr Asquith to protest against the black-bread and horseflesh lies, and the (false statements about unemployment in Berlin and New York. These ways of dragging in foreign countries are ' -considered perfectly right because they are useful to delude the ignorant into voting for Mr Asquith, but there is no report of our rivals watching the progress of tariff reform with apprehension. That is quite shocking.” The “Daily Chronicle,” a Liberal journal, commenting on the position, states: “The decisive issue of the election will be fought in the counties. The alternative is between a majority so attenuated as to make the future uncertain, and a great majority adequate to support a strong Government in coming to grip with the House of Lords, and clearing the path for democratic progress.” The “Times” states: “If the Unionists continue to work as hitherto they have prospects of being the strongest :single party in the new Parliament. In the event of a strong Unionist opposition Mr Asquith’s hands will be strengthened on such vital questions as national defence; also the promotion of all legitimate legislation, but lie will be weak, and most rightly so, for carrying out revolutionary attacks on the constitution, on the integrity of the Empire, and against private property.” The “Daily Telegraph” states in reference to the Irish split that the O’Brienites may be a dozen strong in the new House, and it seems clear rt-.t they will not hesitate to join the opposition against the Budget. The thanksgiving service announced by the vicar of St. John’s, Plumstead, “to commemorate the deliverance of Woolwich from the hands of Socialists and Sabbath breakers,” has been abandoned owing to the bishop’s disapproval of the proposed service. There m as tumultuous enthusiasm in the Stock Exchange as the successive announcements were made of Unionist victories.

—'Woodstock.— Hammerslea, Unionist, 5098. *E. N. Bennett, Liberal, 4378. Unionist gain. SUMMARY OF RESULTS. The returns published this morning show a decided improvement in the position of the Unionists. Out of the 109 seats mentioned, they have secured 57, of which 29 have been captured from the Liberals. The latter have obtained 35 seats, one of which was gained from the Unionists, and one from the Socialists. The Labor party is credited with two seats, and the Irish Nationalists with 12. These returns bring up the totals for the various parties to the following figures:— Unionists ... 208 Liberals 169 Laborites 32 Nationalists ... 59 Total number seats 468 There are still 202 seats to ho accounted for. These returns show that the Unionist members returned outnumber the Liberals by 39, and the Liberal*, and Laborites combined by seven. If the 59 Nationalists, however, be added to those parties, with whom they would probably vote, the total of the three is 260, or 52 more than the Unionists, who have thus decreased their minority in the aggregate by five. The figures .published on Saturday morning showed them to be in a minority of 57 as compared with the combined Strength of the three parties opposed to them. A notable feature of the contest announced this morning is the defeat, for Colne Valley, of Victor Grayson, the Socialist who has become notorious on account of the unmeasured violence of his language towards those who differed from him.

Of special interest to New Zealanders is the return, for the 'Stirling seat, of Dr. Chappie, formerly member for Tuapeka, who lost his seat at the general election in the Dominion.
