SATURDAY’S MATCHES,

The senior and junior competitors were continued at V ictoria Domain and the Taruheru ground on Saturday afternoon, in dull and windy weather. Rain threatened throughout the afternoon, and one or two light showers fell, but play was not interfered with except that the ball was rendered a trifle greasy at times for the bowlers. SENIOR COMPETITION. UNITED v. TARUHERU. The above teams met on the- Taruheru ground. Lasker won the toss /for Taruheru, and sent United to the wickets. W. Gibson and O. R. Olsen gave United a good start, and carried the total to 49 before the latter was run out. The Taruheru bowlers thereafter assumed the upper hand, and the innings closed for the poor total of 95. The chief scorers were W. Brown 41, G. Pollock 23, ,H. Jones 36, and T, Mnr.ro 22 not out. Wanderers’ bowlers were: W. Smith 1 for 32, Muldoon 3 for 41, Hogg 0 for 35, and Hepburn 2 for -35. On going in to bat in their first innings Wanderers only got 40 (W. Smith 11, Power 7, C. Hepburn 6) against the bowling of Jones 4 for 14 and M. Edwards 6 for 20. They were, sent in again, and for their second effort secured 36 for nine wickets, being one man short. A. Hepburn (16) was the

only batsman to secure double figure.s. Y.M.C.A.’s bowlers were: Jones 4 for 15, Winter 2 for 10, Pollock 2 for 7, and Auld 1 for 3. The sixth round of the Auckland Cricket Association’s district championship matches was concluded yesterday in perfect weather. In the senior grade wins were recorded by Eden, North Shore, and Parnell. The details arc:—Eden v. University: Eden Ist innings 290, University first innings 55 (Robinson 28 not out). Mills took 5 wickets for IS runs, and Relf 3 for 14. University second innings 100 for 7 wickets (Jacobsen 27, Taylor 23). Relf took 4 wickets for 14. Eden won by 235 runs on the first innings, a two-point win. Ponsonby v. Parnell : Ponsonby 66 and 12 (Gavin 39, Woods 31). Fairburn took 5 wickets for 39 and Olliffe 5 for 45. Parnell first innings 224 for 6 wickets (innings declared closed), H. Wright 77, E. V. Sale 42 not out. Parnell won bv an innings and 46 runs, a three-point win. North Shore v. Grafton: North Shore 171 and 104 (A. Howden 24 not out, Dacre 24). F. R. Mason took 7 wickets for 3S runs. Grafted first innings 130 (R. Sloman 29,- A. Gray 27). Howden took 7 wickets for 56 runs. Grafton second innings 55 for 3 wickets. North Shore won by 41 runs on the first innings, a two-point win. WAIRARAPA v. HAWKE’S BAY. NAPIER, Jan. 22. The cricket .match Wairarapa v. Hawke’s Bay was commenced on the recreation ground to-day in fine weather, on an easy wicket. There was a good attendance of spectators. Hawke’s Bay batted first and made .206. G. Hawke was top scorer with 64. He got in several fine boundary hits, but gave one easy catch at 32, which was not taken. He played a valuable innings, and he and Bailey put on 83 in their partnership. The Otago Cricket Association has declined the New Zealand Council’s proposal- to provide £l5O guarantee at its own risk for an Australian visit, and decided to adhere to the pooling system. General regret is expressed among cricketers locally at the decision of the Cricket Council this morning to cancel the Australian tour, but the~'opinion is expressed that no other course was possible after the failure of the Council to secure agreement among the Associations. Turner, New South Wales versus*'the Rest of Australia, the home team in the first innings made 302, Trumper 105, Kelleway 607 E. L. Waddy 43 being the chief scorers. The Rest of Australia lost six wickets* for 99 runs, the first three fall, ing for no runs.
