NATIONALISTS’ CONFIDENCE.' United Puesb Association —Copyiiight. LONDON, Jan. 23. Mr Redmond, speaking at Dublin, expressed confidence in Air Asquith’s fulfilment of his pledge. The Nationalists, he said, did not ask for Home Rule before the veto question was settled. When the veto of the Lords was gone the first friendly House of Commons elected would carry Home Rule, irishmen did not ask for separation. Air Winston Churchill, speaking at Torquay, said: ‘‘The Government will run the Budget through or over the House of Lords.” Air Asquith, in a speech at East Fife explaining the Government’s social reform projects, twice .used tho qualifying phrase “if you send us hack to Westminster with an adequate majority.” Grantham and Salisbury polled D 7 per cent of votes on the roll. The newspapers pay a tribute to the exemplary composure of the electorates throughout Britain, and, with but few exceptions, the quiet earnestness of the crowds. ONE RESULT OF THE BUDGET REJECTION. (Received January 24, 9.'40 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 23. Air. Walter Runciman, President of the Local Government Board, speaking at Retford, said' that owing to the rejection of the Budget the Government Fad been obliged to borrow five millions v last week and five millions the week .before, and were arranging for three millions more. They were forced borrowers, and therefore were compelled 'to pay 83 per cent, interest, instead of 3;} per cent. ANOTHER ELECTION CONSIDERED PROBABLE. Air. C. F.. J. Alasterman. in a speech at Redhill, said that the Liberals would do nothing until the Lords’ veto has been broken. They might require another appeal to the country before •many months. A UNIONIST PREDICTION. ' Sir A.. F. Acland Hood; speaking at "'Taunton, said that the county elections had shown that the Lords were absolutely justified in referring the to the people.
